What is Umbraco?

What is Umbraco? If you are reading this guide, then I’m taking a wild guess that you have probably been hearing a lot about Umbraco lately. So, what is Umbraco anyway?

Umbraco is a tool for creating and running websites. Umbraco makes it super easy for people to add and edit website changes without having to be a software developer, or understanding code. With Umbraco powering a website, you are capable of creating any kind of website. Umbraco is capable of creating a simple two-page blog to a full-featured business e-commerce website.

If you are sat there worried because you’ve never built a website before then there’s good and bad news. The good news is that setting up hosting, installing Umbraco and managing content is simple. The bad news is that in order to have a really cool looking website that does everything you need, then you will either need some coding and design skills yourself, or you will have to hire someone to do it for you. After you have a basic template though, you don’t need coding or design skills to run your website.

Getting Umbraco

Umbraco traditionally has had to be installed on a computer like a normal bit of software. Recently, however, Umbraco has released a new version that works in the cloud (online) so you don’t even have to worry about setting it up if you don’t want to.

Umbraco is Free

The best news when using Umbraco… it’s open source and free for anyone to use. If you don’t know what open source software is, then it’s a license that allows you to use and modify it if you want to. So, if you are the sort of person who likes to tinker with code, you can dig in and make Umbraco do just about anything you want it to.

You might be wondering why Umbraco is free and why don’t they sell it? I mean, if Umbraco is as good as I’m saying, then the company would obviously make money by selling it. This mindset would make sense if a single company or individual owned Umbraco.

Umbraco was originally released in 2000 as open source and since then tens of thousands of talented people have made contributions to make it into the great software that it is today. Umbraco HQ is a privately run company that is the major driving factor of pushing Umbraco forward. They do provide commercial support so if you get to a stage where your website grows so big you need help, you know you have a fallback.

Umbraco Hosting

Umbraco does not lock you into any proprietary services, you can host your website with Umbraco, but you are fundamentally free to host your website anywhere you want to (as long as it runs Microsoft technologies).

If you want to run your own Umbraco website for a couple of pages, then I suggest you read, How To Host Your Umbraco Websites.
